SUMMARY:Hamilton\, ON: Film screening: The Space Race - The untold story of Black Astronauts
DESCRIPTION:The Canadian Black Scientists Network-Ontario Regional Node in partnership with McMaster University is pleased to present National Geographic’s documentary THE SPACE RACE\nTHE SPACE RACE uncovers the little-known stories of the first Black pilots\, engineers and scientists who became astronauts. \nAll are welcome!\n\nFriday March 1\, 2024. 7:00pm – 9:30pm ET\nL.R. Wilson Hall\, 1280 Main Street West Hamilton\, ON L8S 4L8\n\nAgenda \n\n7-7:15pm: doors open\, light refreshments served\n7:15-7:30pm: Introduction to partner initiatives and the film\n7:30-9pm: The Space Race screening\n9-9:30pm: post screening activities TBA\n\nRegistration is free. Donations to the network would be appreciated in support of our Science Fair and other programming. \n \nTHE SPACE RACE weaves together the stories of Black astronauts seeking to break the bonds of social injustice to reach for the stars\, including Guion Bluford\, Ed Dwight and Charles Bolden\, among many others. In THE SPACE RACE\, directors Diego Hurtado de Mendoza (The Redeem Team) and Lisa Cortés (Little Richard: I Am Everything) profile the pioneering Black pilots\, scientists and engineers who joined NASA to serve their country in space\, even as their country failed to achieve equality for them back on Earth. From 1963\, when the assassination of JFK thwarted Captain Ed Dwight’s quest to reach the moon\, to 2020\, when the echoes of the civil unrest sparked by the killing of George Floyd reached the International Space Station\, the story of African Americans at NASA is a tale of world events colliding with the aspirations of uncommon men. The bright dreams of Afrofuturism become reality in THE SPACE RACE\, turning science fiction into science fact and forever redefining what “the right stuff” looks like\, giving us new heroes to celebrate and a hidden history to discover. View the trailer here.  \nThe Space Race premieres Sunday\, March 10 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on National Geographic and streaming on STACKTV. \n \nAdditional In-Person Screenings: \n\nFebruary 17\, 2024. SUMMARY:CBSN Career Chats: PhD Career Navigation: from Academia to Industry
DESCRIPTION:CBSN Members are invited to join the next Career Chat of 2024 \nWednesday March 13\, 4pm ET \nTopic:\nPhD Career Navigation: from Academia to Industry\nwith Dr Jodi McKenzie\, PhD\nDr Jodi McKenzie is currently a Director of Clinical Development in Clinical Development Oncology at Eisai Inc.\, where she works with cross-functional teams to design\, develop\, and execute global Phase 1-3 clinical trials (eg\, single-arm trials\, randomized-controlled trials). She is also the Indication Lead for Endometrial Cancer and Clinical Lead for a Pediatric Development Program. She has been working at Eisai for just over 5 years during which time she has transitioned from a Senior Clinical Research Scientist to an Associate Director of Clinical Development to her current Director role. Prior to this\, she was a Clinical Research Scientist in the Phase I Clinical Trial Unit at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center (MDACC)\, where she was involved in the development of clinical trial programs focused on first in man and combination studies of DNA Damage Response and Immuno-oncology agents. As a TRIUMPH (Translational Research in a Multidisciplinary Program) Postdoctoral Fellow at MDACC\, she worked on projects centered on developing combination strategies to improve cancer patient response to immunotherapy. Her research showed that Topoisomerase I inhibitors enhance the efficacy of T cell-based immunotherapy\, by a mechanism dependent on p53 responsive genes. She was also involved in studies that demonstrated the impact of tumor cell signaling pathways\, such as PTEN/PI3K-Akt and Glycolysis\, on immunoresistance in solid tumors. \nPublications: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/?term=Jodi%20McKenzie%20%5BAUTHOR%5D \n  \nPlease contact the CBSN Project Administrator if you are a member looking for the registration link\, or sign into the CBSN ‘connections’ channel on Slack  \nRegister once and we will remind you each month. \nWatch the calendar for future session topic announcements! \n\nSeptember 13.
